Chiller Technology

Chillers

Chillers are a commonly found in many commercial HVAC cooling systems. The primary function of a chiller is to lower the temperature of a fluid such as water, to a value that can be used for producing a cooling effect and integrated with other specially designed HVAC components.

Chillers have received much attention in recent years for new designs and performance improvements to existing designs. Today’s new designs have resulted in chillers with better efficiency and less operation and maintenance costs. Another desirable feature is energy saving and precise load or capacity control for these new chillers. Chiller manufacturers have also expanded their production as well design capabilities to satisfy the diversified demands of today’s innovative HVAC chillers.

Chiller Basics

The chilled fluid absorbs the heat from the building and returns it to the chiller where the latent heat is removed using the refrigeration process. Some chilled water loop arrangements are very complex while others are simple. Chillers range in size from 5 tons all the way up to several hundred tons and are installed in residential high-rise towers, commercial buildings, and industrial process applications.

Preventive maintenance procedures are essential and should be performed regularly by a qualified technician to keep the chiller system clean and operating efficiently. In addition to cleaning, preventive maintenance procedures should include checking refrigerant levels. Routine checks of all electrical connections within the system’s electrical box should be performed at least annually to ensure that the electrical components are operating within the manufacturer’s specifications for safe operation.
